    • What if our most profound education came as we were collecting scars?

Posted at 10:44 PM by carmelasnelbaker
      Mar 10th

Memory is a funny thing, thoughts that are retained from experiences we had can pop up at random times either bringing a smile or sadness.

“You can’t be a good ice skater without getting some bruises.” I remember my dad telling me when he took us to a pond to ice skate with us.

What if the most profound education within a person’s life wasn’t about avoiding the bruises but came within the moments that we were collecting the scars, proving we actually participated and did the best we knew how to do in that moment.

In February I had the opportunity to attend an event hosted by Yokefellowship Prison Ministry and Teen Challenge. I met many beautiful and kind people with an assortment of past experiences who chose to come together to learn, discuss and do what it takes to make improvement in the lives of at risk children and adults.

Listening to the testimonies of several individuals whose past included times of incarceration brought tears. They lived through many hardships as children but their story was not one of blame.

The most remarkable part to me was the fact that at some point the message and comprehension of unconditional love and forgiveness reached past the fear and tough exterior of self reliance and self taught survival, opened the door for Hope and a realization that there is a better way to survive and there are people willing to help accomplish it.

In listening to their testimonies I was reminded of Brené Brown’s book Daring Greatly. She states “Shame is an unspoken epidemic, the secret behind many forms of broken behavior.”

At some point in life everyone experiences painful events. Unspoken burden, embarrassment and shame weighs heavy and traps our life in overwhelming and often debilitating confusion. Once we are able to put words to negative experiences and feelings, they loose power over us.

“Shame cannot survive being spoken. It cannot survive empathy”…… Brené Brown

      no better do better

Their testimony included much more depth then I will be able to explain here but the part that touched my heart was the explanation and recognition that events, bruises and scars from childhood, lay silently hidden and unspoken for many years as they relied on self taught survival techniques to live.

be who you needed when you were younger

Their loving current day actions of reaching out to rescue others currently living within a destructive lifestyle, bringing them Hope and mentor-ship, embracing them with empathy, understanding, and the Divine Love of the Lord, is admirable.

      integrity

2 Corinthians 1:4 He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others. When they are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us.

“Vulnerability is the birthplace of love, belonging, joy, courage, empathy, and creativity. It is the source of hope, empathy, accountability, and authenticity. If we want greater clarity in our purpose or deeper and more meaningful spiritual lives, vulnerability is the path.” Brené Brown Daring Greatly: How the Courage to be Vulnerable Transforms the Way We Live, Love , Parent and Lead.

I read a blog post from 2016 written by Wandering 40 Days titled The Call to Love, Regardless.

He writes “If we can only identify with and love people who have experienced what we have experienced, then we will fail to love. Just because I haven’t had cancer doesn’t mean I can’t sit and cry with a friend who does. That is love. Just because someone’s struggle is far different from mine doesn’t mean I can’t pause and listen to their heartache and longing for love.”

Our current world seems happiest when it is divided into groups. It seems it starts with political lines but spreads like wildfire finding any reason possible to hate and draw lines in the sand.

As humans our lives and experiences will always have many differences and vary greatly, but the truth is we need MORE LOVE and LESS DIVIDING LINES.

Only when we stop trying to control the outcomes and influence others and agree to open our hearts to listening to other human beings heartaches and longings do we truly experience Agape Love.

When we are filled with Divine and Spiritual Awareness and completely understand that as a Child of God we are Loved Unconditionally, it is only then that we can truly Love others and not fear or feel threatened by our differences.

“Be soft. Do not let the world make you hard. Do not let pain make you hate. Do not let the bitterness steal your sweetness. Take pride that even though the rest of the world may disagree, you still believe it to be a beautiful place.”………….. Kurt Vonnegut Jr.

    • Why Am I Still Here? They Ask

Posted at 8:05 PM by carmelasnelbaker
      Dec 8th

A caregivers ears hear many things. No-one’s life is ever free of difficulties of some sort, and each life has a path and a purpose only they will be able to fulfill.

“I don’t know why I am still here.” a 90 year old says to me. “That must mean you still have wisdom to pass on to us.” I tell him.

Wisdom however, is not always passed on easily. Quite possibly the wisdom our own life possesses may not even be apparent to us while we’re living.  Is this what frustrates our existence and stirs up anger or restlessness in us?

Attempting to live out our purpose and understand why we are still here is often a struggle.

Although some pretty bits of wisdom are sometimes spoken sweetly, and appear to come with ease. A number of my experiences could be better explained as a scavenger hunt. The Wisdom may only be revealed to me after being preceded by many long days of hearing statements such as “Clean out your ears” “don’t you listen?” “Get the hell out of here.” It is only when I  continue to go back for more, when the beauty finally is revealed.

I wholeheartedly believe in Divine Guidance. When we follow our inner voice and bravely do as we feel it is leading us to do, amazing things happen. The Journey may not always be easy and carefree but most assuredly the individuals you meet along the way are a blessing  not just a chance encounter but a divine introduction.

As the majority of the world is enduring the busy responsibilities that everyday life often demands, others are faced with the seriousness of palliative care or hospice care. The differences in these two worlds are huge.

This is a journey one enters into kicking and screaming with resistance! As with anything that hurts, it is most natural for our heart to want to turn away from and run as fast as you can to escape the pain of loss. Not being able to distance yourself from it’s approach can leave a soul angry and confused.

A heart that Truly loves others grieves with profound sadness when the journey of another Soul begins a new path of life and leaves it’s earthly body, friends and family behind.

Messages of Wisdom come most profoundly from the heaviest of hearts. Life on earth is not always happiness and joy. Great Wisdom and Growth often happen in the midst of great pain and sorrow. The silent moments that unfold as a Soul is nearing the end of their earthly journey are moments in time like no other.

This past week several Beautiful Souls have completed their earthly journey and entered into their new life beyond earth. I feel truly honored to have met them and spent time being their caregiver. My heart aches along with their families.

Like a fingerprint on a piece of glass, every Soul is unique. The Wisdom and Love they leave upon the earth could only be passed along by them.

I will hold dearly their unique wisdom and will continue sharing their memory and wisdom with others here on earth. Although my heart is heavy now, getting to know them and sharing time in their presence has left a very positive influence on my life.

Among the still and quiet moments we spend with someone on this journey profound messages are communicated. Even when the moments feel only like silent helplessness their wisdom will eventually reach you and become clear.

It is an honor like no other for our hearts to be able to facilitate the wisdom of an Angelic Soul beginning life anew, Peaceful and Free of pain and sorrow.

A song miraculously found its way to my ears during heartbreaking outcries of grief and confusion this week. With each loss we experience, each one so drastically different and unique, it often feels overwhelmingly hard to make sense of the details and circumstances.

My heart finds strength from those I give care to. I will continue on, being grateful for each and every Soul my life’s journey introduces me to. Each and every Angelic Soul holds a very special place in my heart.

Once a Soul’s message of wisdom is released it is impossible to contain it once again. It will float freely to influence many others who long to understand it’s message.

    • If Courage Is A Flower Desire Is The Water That Helps It Grow

Posted at 11:08 PM by carmelasnelbaker
      Mar 14th

      courage

“Moral excellence comes about as a result of habit. We become just by doing just acts, temperate by doing temperate acts, brave by doing brave acts.” – Aristotle

                               Courage

Being courageous is not allowing our limiting beliefs stop us from accomplishing what we want. It’s about following through with difficult procedures, tasks or dreams when everyone and everything around us says it’s impossible to do.

If Courage is a flower desire is the water that helps it to grow.

One cannot have courage apart from desire. The fire fighter rushes into the building to rescue someone with great courage only because he has the desire to help others. The desire to help is the very thing that gives him such great courage. The teenager that tries out for a role in the high school musical has the desire to entertain others. The student that studies medicine has the desire to heal people.  Might this be an example of the awesome universal connection that is available to every living being? One apart from the other will fail.

Is the humble willingness of a person to open their heart to accept and ask for assistance from God what gives a Hero the amazing sometimes super human strength and desire to both endure and react heroically?

There are many places within the Bible that state “Do not be afraid, for I am with you.”

What if a very simple silent prayer for Divine help is all we need to fill our heart with both desire and courage.

The Immenseness of our universe is both unimaginable and magical. Simply take a moment to admire the stars on a clear night. Quiet your thoughts and simply be still in the moment. One persons’ physical presence seems so incredibly small and insignificant under the vast sky.

However if a person opens their heart and mind and asks for wisdom and guidance from the very maker of the stars the significance and potential  increase immensely  as a beautiful Divine light of desire and courage will  glow from within. Might it be this connection, the companionship of human and divine that leads us to an unimaginable coexistence filled with joy, love, wisdom and peace?

Every day we are faced with situations that require courage. Some may be mild and others can be devastatingly harsh. Planning ahead and thinking through how we can possibly respond may be helpful in reducing stress and increasing courage, but most importantly always keeping your heart and mind open to and listening for the whisper of Divine guidance from within will give us the courage we need to stand up for what is right and just and possess the confidence to respond in a brave and compassionate manner.

With respect, hope, joy, and love,

      Carmela
